saying bye-bye to obesity, one day at a time

For the past few days, I had a really intense burger craving. I happen to love burgers a lot, but I know that they’re not very healthy, nor can they be considered diet food.

I was able to resist for a few days but yesterday, while waiting for a movie, I found myself wanting one BADLY. I successfully stayed away from Chili’s , where the burgers are YUMMY. But on my way to Red Mango (where I had planned to just have yogurt instead) I passed by Fuzion and decided to try that out. How was I to know they sold burgers too??? I thought it was just a Fruit Shake/Yogurt drink station.

Anyway, I ended up ordering their burger….

Granted not a healthy dinner, but I figured I better give in to the craving now before it gets so bad I eat three burgers in one sitting! To help cut calories (as if!) I ordered a fresh strawberry yogurt shake. I also wiped of the mayo from the burger and I didn’t eat the top part of the bread which was soaked in the mayo. And I removed the bacon that was lying on top of the meat.

What I liked about this burger was I could see chunks of carrots incorporated to the meat. Although it is indeed an extender, I guess it’s a good thing because it lessened the meat even just a little bit.

okay enough with the rationalizing…

oh…and that bacon….it ended up being eaten after all. phail!

Fuzion is located at the 2nd Floor of Greenbelt 3, near the cinema ticket counters.

As I continue down this journey to better health, I am often reminded that more than being slim and sexy, my goal should be to be healthy and fit. I catch myself often skipping meals and depriving myself to the point that I get woozy then before I know it, I am binging because of it. Also, I’ve been taking more careful note of my body’s response to things, especially since I had gotten sick again this week. From being breathless when I walk to getting a nagging pain at the back of my legs as well as having feelings of rising blood pressure, I have to keep this in check, after all, I don’t wanna keel over and pass out, right?

What I have decided to start this week is to be more consistent in monitoring my health, rather than just my weight. This includes getting a basic check done, including blood tests and the like to get a baseline of how things are. And then I hope to be able to monitor these from home just to keep tabs of progress. Lucky for me we have all sorts of health gadgets and equipment such as sphygmomanometers, glucometers and pulse oximeters which we used for my grandfather before. I want to be able to accomplish the following, besides dropping pounds that it: lowering my cholesterol level, maintaining a healthy blood pressure consistently, and having a stable sugar count. Why these three? Given my family history of hypertension and diabetes, plus the fact that I have PCOS, I am at risk for these illnesses.

Over the past few months, my blogger friends talked a lot about one of their new favorite drink places, Serenitea. I would read their raves and their cravings for it but because the only branch I was aware of back then was all the way in San Juan (a good 30-45 minutes away from my house), it remained a mystery to me. That’s until one day a friend of mine shared with me the most fabulous news: Serenitea is open in BF!

A few weeks ago, I finally was able to see what it was all about. Accompanied by my friend T, we wound down after a long day of psychological assessments with a cool cup of tea.

I ordered the Hokkaido while T ordered the Okinawa flavor. These were two of the most popular variants my blogger friends were posting about.

I enjoyed the tea a lot and what makes it different from the other tea places which offer the same thing is that you can choose the amount of sugar placed in the drink. You can opt for the regular blend, which has the regular 100% sugar in it, or you can go down by increments of 25%. The less sugar, the less fattening, right? Plus the healthier. I question, however, the healthiness of the tapioca balls!!!

Serenitea BF is located at 268 Aguirre Avenue, BF Homes Paranaque (tel no. 7943288). It’s a cozy little nook with a relaxing ambiance, with a few single couches and contemporary coffee tables (oh, correction, tea tables haha!) that can seat about 12-20. Adding to the homey feel is the free wifi they offer :-)

I think I have identified one of the major culprits in weight gain: fast food.

I know, I know, it doesn’t take a genius to know that eating in a fast food joint where food is filled with all sorts of trans fat and deep fried. However, even the “healthy” stuff can actually be fattening. Take for example chicken nuggets. While definitely less fatty than most other food items on the menu, it still is deep fried and battered, right? Another faker in the menu are salads, especially those that are drenched in heavy dressing.

As such, I am trying to make it a point to bring my own baon more consistently. Whether it be a sandwich, salad or a light meal, I will try to make the extra effort to do this. While staying away 100% from restos and fast food places is an impossibility given my schedule, I will try to chose better places to eat and should I decide to order something in one of the quick and easy places, I will take little steps to lessen calorie intake, such as asking for dressing on the side, no mayo, and the like.

I am a big fan of cream. Full cream, full fat cream, all-purpose cream…I love it. Be it as my carbonara base or with fruits in season, cream just makes the dish so much better. But while it tastes delicious, it is terrible for my waistline. Plus if I’m not mistaken, cream is bad for the heart too because of it’s high fat content.

Recently, I saw this when I was in the grocery:

Nestlé D’Lite cream is a healthier alternative to the usually heavier and fattier creams available. Do not be fooled, however, because this is SOYA CREAM meaning it is not made of milk, like most creams are usually made of. Given that it is soy based, it tastes VERY different. It doesn’t taste bad, but it can throw you off a bit at first. I used this to make my carbonara recipe and at first, it was really hard to enjoy the dish, mainly because the cream has a different kind of sweetness to it. However, after adding a buillon cube and some fresh mushrooms, it came close to what my usual fatty carbonara tastes like.

I haven’t tried this yet as a substitute for fruit salads or other desserts that require cream, though. I’m not sure how different that one would be mainly because the cream plays such a big role in dessert dishes. As a base, however, I think it is a good enough substitute, as long as you make the necessary adjustments because of the vastly different flavor it has. However, if you really are serious about wanting to make healthier choices, that is a sacrifice you can make right? That’s what I’m trying to do.

I am grateful I live in a highly technological world.

Be it in my diet journey, or in my job as a teacher, I find that having access to all sorts of sites resources that can help me in so many ways. For example, there are lots of online fora that help support fellow dieters. You can ask questions such as how many calories are there in a certain dish to tips and tricks on exercise and the like. In the field of education, the benefits of technology is boundless. From helping teachers like me make learning more meaningful to helping student prepare for college with sat prep courses for example, technology can really make a vast difference. This is especially beneficial because it can address all sorts of learning styles and personalities. Unlike reading a textbook, for example, reviewing for exams or doing practice exercises for the SAT’s, or other similar pre-college qualifying exams, can make a kinesthetic learner like me take in more information because it merges action to visual stimuli.

Online support systems have definitely changed the way learning and adapting to the demands of everyday life in a lot of great ways, and despite occasional faults modern technology has, these improvements definitely outweigh those. I wonder how this could have changed my own experiences if it were available when I was younger!

I know there is no quick fix to obesity. Trust me, I’ve tried just about everything.

However, when you’re working on a deadline, it would probably help to have quick and easy weight loss tricks up your sleeve, right?

In my case, my best frien’s wedding is in 3 months and I’ve barely made a dent in my weight loss journey. I have come to the point where I am willing to try almost anything to be able to lose at least 15 pounds before the wedding. Well, anything except liposuction or surgery! I’m not sure I’m brave enough for that. Acupuncture, thermogenic fat burners, body wraps, hypnotherapy and even radio frequency laser techniques are among those I may be willing to try. I just do not know which one would be the best one to try!

I know being slim and trim is not an important factor for my best friend and despite the way I look, she’d be glad to have me in her bridal party. But take a look at this:

See how all the other bridesmaids look so slim and pretty and I’m…just pretty? Hehe :-) Seriously though, times like these make me feel a bit insecure about myself and while I am able to overcome it and feel better after a while, I don’t like the feeling :-(

Besides the obvious, which is wanting to look slim and sexy, losing weight has a lot of health benefits that will definitely impact life as one knows it. For example, losing just 5 pounds can make a difference in my ability to keep up with the kids I teach. It will also make my asthma less of a problem, not that I won’t have attacks anymore but I think by losing weight I can be better able to manage attacks because my heart and lungs will be stronger, right?

Other health benefits can include:

1. Less aches and pains, from joints to lower back, and even headaches and soreness.

2. Clearer and brighter skin free from acne, eczema and other kinds of skin diseases or irritations. I remember in an recent episode of Grey’s Anatomy, an extremely obese man found himself in the brink of death because his skin had rot under the folds of his belly. I think it goes beyond just simple hygene and yes, being overweight can make you more prone to these kinds of irritations.

3. Better blood circulation. When I sleep, I notice that my hand kind of gets numb on the side I lean on, I assume its because of the weight bearing down on that area for prolonged periods.

4. Better overall functioning. Being thinner can allow one to move around more easily and navigate in their day to day activities.

5. Psychological wellness. No matter how much I have learned to accept myself for who I am, I cannot deny that till now, being overweight can make me feel bad.

These are just among the reasons why losing weight is important. For me, the top reason for losing weight is that when I am thinner and healthier, I can be a better mommy for Bubba :-)

Today my pants went rrriiiiiiiippp.

Pathetic.

Huhuhu.

Since I’ve gained the weight back, I have broken about 6 pairs of pants. It doesn’t really rip at the seas because the pants technically fit me, but it kinda rips on the inner thigh area, most likely due to friction. Dang it, I need new pants again.

Day by day, I am starting to feel the consequences of being obese. Right now, there is this pain at the back of my leg, kinda like a cramp, that wasn’t there before. It kinda feels tight and throbby. I know the strain of carrying extra weight is causing that. Also, today as I sat in my clinic chair working with a relatively active young boy, I could barely keep up because whenever I did, there was a sharp pain in my lower back.

Besides the weight, I have noticed how my unhealthy diet has translated to so many other physical symptoms. For example, my once flawless skin (yes, I had flawless skin. I never had pimples or blemishes, even during puberty) is now all…ewww. I have all these bumps and yucky stuff and I think part of what’s causing it is my bad diet. I think my changing my diet will beat any of the acne solutions in the market. Or at least make it work better for my skin, right?

Another unsightly side effect of my obesity are all the stretch marks I get :-(
